After having been defeated by Kentucky’s no. 1 volleyball team (Assumption) the night before across the river, Floyd Central coach Bart Powell was wondering how his Lady Highlanders would respond to their first loss of the season when visiting Silver Creek. The Floyd girls have been ranked no. 1 most of the season, and were 12-0 headed into the game at Assumption.
The Lady Highlanders responded to the challenge with a 25-13, 25-7, 25-14 sweep of the Lady Dragons. Floyd Central now stands at 13-1.
Referring to the week just completed, Powell said it had been “a little bit up and a little bit down.”
He added, “Sometimes when we’re playing, I don’t think we’re playing as well as we can. It was good to see us rebound tonight.”
Assumption was not only the top ranked volleyball team in Kentucky, but they were ranked 19th in the nation in some polls. Floyd Central has been ranked in the top 30 nationally themselves.
Powell attributes the win to taking care of the ball.
“We had a lot of good ball control all night,” he said.
Besides, in game 2, Floyd had eight aces, and Powell said that from a serving standpoint, “we controlled that game.”
Melanie Stutsman had 25 assists in the match, and Camry Hinton added 5 kills. Allison Sims added 5 aces, with 3 of them in the middle game.
