The Henryville Lady Hornets and the Silver Creek Lady Dragons both fell in the morning semi finals of their respective classes in the IHSAA semi states in volleyball Saturday.

Henryville won the first two games in its Class A first round match against Indianapolis Lutheran at North Daviess, and Indianapolis Lutheran won 20-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-10.

In the Class AAA semi final in the morning at Jasper, Evansville Memorial defeated Silver Creek 25-14, 19-25, 25-14, 25-21.

The Lady Hornets led 12-6 in the first game, and led 18-17 in the third game.

Things started to go downhill early for Henryville in the fourth game, when they found themselves down 20-13 early in the going.

Henryville led 2-1 at the start of the fifth and deciding game, but in the words of Henryville coach Shallon Willen, “Things kind of fell apart.”

Despite the loss, Willen enjoyed the atmosphere in the gym at North Daviess.

It was a tight match, it was an exciting match,” said Willen. “We just came up a little bit short. I don’t know if they were better, or smarter, or a little bit more experienced.”

Henryville has 11 players returning next year, and Willen hopes to see the program get back to w inning sectionals. This year is the first year that the team has won a sectional in volleyball since 1992.

On the other hand, Henryville is moving up to class AA next year, and Willen thinks that they will have to step up the effort.

We’ll be fine; we already play the AA schools locally,” Willen said.

For one thing, Willen said that they play Crothersville about four times in the regular season, and she added that they will have to drop them a few times, and add some bigger schools for the competitiveness factor.

I have high hopes, even though we’re taking it to the next level,” she added.

In the match, Brittany Pierce had 25 kills; Erika Robertson had 22 kills and 4 aces; and setter Allison Knox had 34 assists.

The Lady Hornets close out the season with a record of 30-7.

Silver Creek-

Silver Creek coach Jeff Zimmerman was impressed with the athletic skills of Memorial. He thought they might just be tall, with two players standing 6-3, and a pair standing 6-1.

They were very good,” admitted Zimmerman. “We weren’t expecting them to be as fundamentally sound as they were.”

They blocked very well; they kept the pressure on us.”

The height of Memorial gave Silver Creek problems, said Zimmerman.

It made it a little tough,” Zimmerman said. “They really forced our hitters to alter their shots a little. That’s something that’s caused some problems. We felt like we competed with them.”

In the match, Hayley Garr had 12 kills and 7 aces, and Kristyn Maymon had 10 kills and 4 aces.
