![]() Borden started off 14-8 in front after the 1st quarter of action. They extended their advantage to 32-18 headed into the locker room at the break. CAI outscored Borden 10-8 in the 3rd quarter, and in the 4th quarter started to score off of three point goals. In fact, CAI started to hit from the outside right before the end of the 3rd period, when Danielle Castleman connected on a three right at the end of the 3rd. Borden struck first in the 4th, when Mikel scored (7:44) to give the Lady Braves a 42-28 lead. CAI then went on a tear, outscoring Borden 9-0 over the next three plus minutes, and a pair of threes was in the mix. First, Stephanie Combs hit at 7:16, and Kelsey Biggs hit one of the three pointers (6:07) to get the Lady Warriors within 42-33. Biggs hit one of two free throws later and then Alex Dale hit a three (4:33) to score her only points of the game. CAI had closed within 42-37 by then, and Borden was forced to call a full time out (4:26) to try to slow down CAI. Borden missed a shot in the lane 12 seconds later, and CAI hit a deuce to close to within 42-39. Mikel hit a pair of free throws (3:39) to give the Lady Braves some breathing room, but Borden again missed shot in the paint, and CAI had a chance at an old fashioned three point play with three minutes left. Jessie Wise scored a basket off of an offensive rebound, but missed the free throw attempt. Jordan Cook of Borden fouled out with her fifth personal foul in the play. Up only 44-41, Borden managed to score a single point off of a pair of charity attempts from Mikel (2:37), and Mikel again hit a lone freebie out of two tries with a minute-five to go in the game. Borden got possession of the ball on a jump ball called (1:01), but missed the front end of a one and one attempt at the line soon after. CAI missed a three point attempt with 47 seconds left, and Borden missed the front end of a one and one (:43.3), keeping CAI within 46-41. CAI again missed a three attempt with 22 seconds on the clock, and Borden then held the ball for the final score. Borden coach Charlie Gardner was relieved to see his team pull out the win. CAI is in the same Class A sectional as his Lady Braves, and they might meet next week in the sectional at New Washington. “They (CAI) came back and put some pressure on us at the end,” said Gardner. “I was proud of the girls. We’ve had that happen before this year, and we’ve folded.” CAI coach Tim Coomer wasn’t displeased with his team’s efforts. “The girls played hard,” Coomer said. “They didn’t lose their composure. We don’t have a lot of experience. That’s probably some of the best man to man defense we’ve played all year.” Besides the output from Mikel, Borden (6-11) also got six points and eight rebounds from Allison Bishop. The Lady Warriors (6-14) were led in double figures by Rachel Boesing (15), and Kelsey Biggs (12). |
